Kimathi Mafafo

Resident Artist: South Africa

Kimathi Mafafo was born in Kimberley in 1984. From 2002 to 2004 she studied towards a Diploma in Fine Arts and in 2007 worked at The Bag Factory in Johannesburg where she gained experience in printmaking.

Kimathi was exposed to art from an early age. Her father, a respected watercolour painter, sculptor and board member at the McGregor Museum in Kimberly, encouraged her and her brother to attend regular art classes at the museum from an early age. Here she was exposed to a wide scope of art ranging from San rock art to Dutch and Flemish portrait art. Her first painting was a still life composition of flowers in a vase. This was the beginning of a long love affair with painting flowers. She paints flowers with intensity and attention to detail and often use them as a design element in her work.

She works mainly with oil paint on canvas and has introduced Embroidery in her spectrum.
